Camp Tutira

This term we went to Camp Tutira. One of our favourite activities was the Flying Kiwi. You were harnessed up, attached to a rope and the rest of the class were holding the end of the rope. The rope went up about 10 metres through a pulley. The person harnessed up (the kiwi) had to yell out "Kiwi ready ."
The people holding the rope said "Wings ready."
Then the Kiwi said "Flying on three 1, 2, 3 . ."
The wings pull the rope and the kiwi goes flying up. There were four different ways of going up. 1 - straight up, 2 - swinging, 3 - around in circles, 4 - spinning quickly in a circles.

It was great fun.

Symmetry

As part of our mathematics learning we have been leaning about reflective symmetry. We went to the carpark and looked at the car logos, we had to make up our own logo that was a mirror image.

We have had to complete symmetrical shapes.

Art Deco

We went to the museum and we learnt about the 1931 earthquake that struck Napier. The buildings that were rebuilt after the earthquake were built in the art deco style. It was raining so we did not get to go around town looking at the patterns. In class we looked at all the different patterns. We then tried to design our own.

Camp Tutira

On the 18 /23 of May Room 8 is going to Camp Tutira.

Some of our favourite activities will be:

On one night we are going to have a midnight feast. Which includes lollies chocolates and lots of home made baking.

On Monday we will be doing the Flying Kiwi activity. We fly off the ground and glide back to ground.

On Thursday we are going to be doing Caseys Clamber. This is a really muddy activity.

We will be sleeping in girls and boys dorms. This will be really cool because there will be no annoying girls in the boys dorm and no noisy boys in the girls dorm.

It will be cool learning new stuff out side of the class room.

Check out our blog for new pictures after camp.

Active Room 8

Year 6 Challenge

The Year 6 challenge is when you play a game against Room 9 or 10. We play Capture the Flag, Dodge Ball, Seaweed and Run the Gauntlet. We play for a cup and a mascot called Snoppy.

Patter Tennis World Cup

We play doubles. Each person is paired up with another person and are given a country.
We have referees and we designed the rules. We play a round robin each team gets three points for a win. The top eight play in the quarter finals. Check the blog for who wins this.

Silent Ball

This is a class activity. Our whole class does this as a brain break when we work well. We pass a tennis ball around silently. You are out if you drop the ball, speak and also if you hit something.
The teacher can add challenges like; standing on one leg with one eye shut.

Dance to Some Music

The teacher picks a person. This person picks the CD and then the teacher will start the dance off then we are chosen to do a different dance move.

Capture the Flag

We go out onto the field with 8 cones. We set this up in a grid. Each team has one cone to grab and run over the half way line with it. There are defenders that have to be three metres away from the flag that can tag you. There are rescuers. If you get tagged you are rescued. We play for 15 minutes.

If you have any questions about this game as there are lots of other rules please send in a comment by clicking below.

Optimist Yachting

We were learning to sail Optimist Yachts at Pandora Pond. We set up the yachts for sailing. On the first day we learnt to sail the yachts and get confident on the water. There were two or three people in a yacht. One held the tiller while the other person held the mainsheet. We had to work as a team.

We did a relay activity so that we could learn to sail by ourselves. The next day we played a game called Cat and Mouse to practice tacking.

When not sailing we went crabbing, swimming and also went for a walk.

It was really fun and exciting.
